Before You Reach Out

Coaching vs. Counseling

They overlap in the room and get confused constantly, but they are not the same work, they answer different needs, and one of them may be the wrong fit for what you are carrying right now. Here is the honest version.

The short version

Counseling (also called therapy or psychotherapy) treats. It works with mental-health conditions, old wounds, symptoms, and pain. It looks backward as much as forward, because it is often about healing something that happened. It is delivered by licensed clinicians, it is regulated by the state, and a counselor can only practice with clients located where they are licensed.

Coaching builds. It starts from the assumption that you are well and capable, and it works forward, on where you are trying to go and what is standing between you and getting there. It is not treatment, it does not diagnose, and it is not bound to a single state's license.

Both are real, skilled, structured work. Neither is a lesser version of the other. They are built for different jobs.

Side by side

Counseling / Therapy

Treats and heals

  • For Mental-health conditions, distress, trauma, symptoms that interfere with living
  • Asks "What happened, and how do we heal it?"
  • Looks Backward and present, to understand and repair
  • Can Diagnose and treat
  • Who Licensed clinicians, state-regulated
  • Where Only where the clinician holds a license
Coaching

Builds and moves forward

  • For Growth, direction, decisions, performance, the gap between knowing and doing
  • Asks "Where are you going, and what is in the way?"
  • Looks Forward, toward what you are becoming
  • Does not Diagnose or treat conditions
  • Who Trained coaches; presumes a well, capable client
  • Where Not bound to one state's jurisdiction

The line blurs in practice because good work in either room borrows from the other. A skilled counselor helps you move forward; a skilled coach helps you understand yourself. The difference that matters is not the conversation. It is the purpose, the scope, and the protections around it.

What "clinically informed coaching" means

I am both a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Certified Coach. When I coach, I am not doing therapy, but I am not leaving my clinical training at the door either. I understand how a nervous system under stress behaves, how attachment shapes the way a person relates, how old patterns run without permission. That understanding informs the coaching.

Clinically informed coaching means the coaching is smarter for the clinical training behind it. It does not mean the coaching is therapy.

It also means I know where the edge is. If what you actually need is treatment, I will tell you, rather than coach around a problem that calls for care.

Which one do you need?

  • Choose counseling

If you are dealing with depression, anxiety that runs your day, trauma, grief that has you stuck, or any mental-health condition that is interfering with your ability to live. If you are in crisis. If the past is not staying in the past.

  • Choose coaching

If you are basically well but stuck. If you know roughly where you want to go and cannot seem to close the distance. If you want a thinking partner for growth, decisions, direction, or the work of becoming who you intend to be.

  • Sometimes both

Plenty of people do therapy and coaching at once, for different jobs. There is no rule against it, and often they support each other.

If you need counseling, not coaching

Coaching is not a substitute for mental-health treatment, and it is not for acute crisis. If you are a resident of Texas and need counseling, you can work with me in my clinical practice at ResonantChangesCounselingPLLC.com. If you are elsewhere, a licensed provider in your own state is the right place to start.

If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself, please contact your local emergency number now. In the U.S., you can call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

Still not sure which fits?

Book a consultation. Part of that conversation is figuring out whether coaching is the right work for you, and whether I am the right person for it.
